A later lab named four patterns of speech that predict a break.
John Gottman watched couples fight in a room he called the Love Lab. Heart rate, skin, what was said, what the face did. The topic did not matter. How they spoke did.
Criticism names a person instead of a deed. Always. Never. What’s wrong with you. Contempt is worse: you are lesser. Mockery, the eye-roll, the laugh at rather than with. In that lab it is the single strongest predictor of divorce. Defensiveness returns the blame so no one has to arrive. Stonewalling is the wall. Silence. The body still in the chair and the person gone.
To the one still speaking it reads as I do not care. In the physiology it is often flooding: the heart too fast, listening offline. Flooding sits beside stonewalling.
A later clinic named splitting: the swing between I love you and I hate you, as if a person could only be all one or all the other.
A therapist later named quieter damages. You need to get over it. I’m sorry, but. You always. Dismissal wearing care.
Not only a marriage. A friend can be spoken this way. A parent. The one who stays to care.

I love humanity

If we’re just alone and conscious and intelligent, it doesn’t mean nearly as much as if we’re with others. There’s some magic created when we’re together. The highest form of it is love, which I think broadly is much bigger than just romantic. Also family.

If you can properly frame the question, the answer, relatively speaking, is easy. If you want to understand the meaning of life, we need to expand the scope and scale of consciousness so that we’re better able to understand the nature of the universe.
